Marriage Annulment

The Catholic Church grants annulments (decrees of nullity) to declare that a marriage, which appeared valid, actually lacked essential elements required by Church law from its inception. Unlike divorce, which dissolves a valid marriage, an annulment finds a valid sacramental bond was never formed. Reasons include lack of free consent, psychological incapacity, or hidden impediments. Annulments are required in some cases before a non-Catholic receives their sacraments of inititaion when entering the church and when a Catholic who has been previously divorced wants to be married in the Church.
